Third Man Records vinyl exclusives, Part 62: Iggy and The Stooges “Raw Power - The 7-Inch Edition” (2024)
The 62nd set of exclusive vinyl items offered to members of Third Man Records’ Vault service was mailed out to the members in December of 2024. For those who are unaware, Third Man Records is the label owned by Jack White, who was the leader of the White Stripes, the Raconteurs, and the Dead Weather, and is now a solo artist. The Vault service promises to deliver exclusive vinyl-only records (usually one full-length album and one 7” single) to its members every three months.
The 62nd Vault package featured a new vinyl edition of Raw Power, the raw and powerful 1973 pre-punk record by Iggy (Pop) and the Stooges. This edition utilized the 1973 David Bowie mixes of the album's eight tracks, as opposed to the 1997 mixes by Iggy Pop. But instead of being pressed on an LP, the eight tracks were pressed on four 7-inch colored-vinyl singles, packaged in a splendid silver-foil slipcase. The package also contained two additional 7-inch discs containing five outtakes from the Raw Power sessions. These outtake discs came in picture sleeves with photos of Iggy taken in 1973 by Leee Black Childers. The set also contained an embroidered patch resembling the cheetah logo on the back of Iggy's jacket in a photo from the original LP's back cover. The colors of the vinyl discs -- brown, red, black, mint green, and silver -- were drawn from the cheetah logo's color palette.
Since I already own all of the tracks from this set, I sat this Vault quarter out. None of the tracks here are rarities, as Raw Power is commercially available, and the five outtakes are included on the album's 50th Anniversary Legacy Edition. I reviewed Raw Power in this post from 2012. The outtakes were once issued on a limited edition vinyl LP called Rare Power, which I reviewed here in 2018.
A note for fellow vinyl aficionados: the practice of engraving text in the dead wax, or the runout grooves between the sticker and the last track’s grooves, is present on the discs in this Vault package. Side A has "Breckin's Brother" etched, Side B has "Ow, Pre-War" etched, Side C has "Forshey" etched, Side D has "Cougar" etched, Side E has "Waukeegan" etched, Side F has "Living With The Ditties Unchecked" etched, Side G has "The Pyramids" etched, Side H has "I Know What's Happening To Us" etched, Side I has "In The Car" etched, Side J has "Curry Takeaway" etched, Side K has "Conjoined" etched, and Side L has "Ten Years Time Ago" etched. And another thing: sides H, J and L play at 33 rpm, while all the other sides play at 45 rpm.
