Buckingham Nicks album from 1973 will finally be re-released in CD and digital formats
At long last! On September 19, 2025, the Buckingham Nicks album is finally being reissued by Rhino, in CD and digital formats. Also, a limited edition vinyl issue will be sold through the Rhino website, limited to 5,000 copies. In addition, a special vinyl edition, limited to 2,000 copies, will contain two replica 7-inch singles with original mixes of four songs.
You may be understandably asking: "What album are you talking about?" Buckingham Nicks was the self-titled 1973 album recorded by the duo of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, a few short years before they attained mega-stardom as members of Fleetwood Mac. In fact, this album is what led to the two performers being asked to join Fleetwood Mac, after Mick Fleetwood heard a recording of the album's closing track "Frozen Love". This album ought to be legendary, right? In a way, it has become that. But, oddly enough, the album has not been commercially available for decades. It was never officially released on CD, and has never been available on streaming services. But that's about to change.
So, what took so long? This album has been widely sought-after -- not to mention much-bootlegged -- for as long as I can remember. I managed to purchase a copy back in the 1990's, and that lucky find was one of the main inspirations for the creation of my website, Rarebird's Rock and Roll Rarity Reviews, back in 1999. I had hoped to be able to report news of a reissue long ago. When I first wrote my review of the album, it was a 26-year-old rarity. Who would have thought it would take another 26 years for this historically significant album to finally become properly commercially available?
The exact reasons for the album's odd long-term unavailability have never been clear. But the album's legend and sense of mystery have grown larger over time, even during this age when endless information is at our fingertips. Last year, indie artists Madison Cunningham and Andrew Bird collaborated on a full track-by-track remake of Buckingham Nicks, which may be one key reason why the album's long-awaited reissue is finally coming. In any case, I am happy to finally report the welcome news!
The reissued album can be pre-ordered at the Rhino website.
